About this deal

Get your KS1 children excited to learn about animals, including humans, using our delightful animals kids’ book ‘Animals All Around’. Owl teaches Arlo a bedtime song, which focuses on thoughts of happy places, a relaxation of the body, a slowing down of breathing patterns and meditation about sinking into the soft ground.

All of these are wrong in the sense that modern science has replaced them with different models, but they were scientific in that they attempted to explain observed phenomena, proposed mechanisms, and made testable predictions. A unique and rip-roaringly funny, tongue-twisting story full of weird and wonderful real creatures and facts at the end that will amaze.

Some of Aristotle's observations were not taken seriously by science until they were independently rediscovered in the 19th century. A lovely mix of whodunnit with a slightly preposterous story of a penguin who comes to live with our two heroes, Imogen (age 9) and Arthur (age 6), causing them to put aside their sibling squabbles and come to his rescue. It teaches children all about the five animal groups: birds, mammals, fish, amphibians and reptiles. It’s like someone took my early 20s and put them on crack and ecstasy and then flipped it all around til all I want to do is vomit. Generally seen as a pioneering work of zoology, Aristotle frames his text by explaining that he is investigating the what (the existing facts about animals) prior to establishing the why (the causes of these characteristics).

Imaginative, accessible and little bit wild, Hotel Flamingo is a fabulous early chapter book with fun illustrations set in pinks and greys. Her drinking is, in part, a reaction to this, a way of escaping the constant sense of being monitored. I think it was elevated by the fact that our lead characters are intelligent and have depth, so you aren’t just reading about endless vapid shenanigans without real introspection. He looks to all the latest fashion accessories to achieve his goal of being truly fabulous, but in the end it is Frankie’s friends who will help him learn that the things that really do make him fabulous are on the inside.

Al-Jahiz was born in Basra to a poor family, and in his youth he worked selling fish on the city canals. What it’s like is being along for the ride as the one sober person while people you kinda don’t like get wasted on a mixture of drugs and booze. Like other classical authors such as Pliny the Elder, Aristotle also gathered evidence from travellers and people with specialised knowledge, such as fishermen and beekeepers, without much attempt to corroborate what they said. combined with engaging questions (“Imagine having that many brothers and sisters…How would you remember all their names? Mrs Barn Owl sends him down from his nest-hole to ask about the dark and he meets a little boy waiting for the fireworks to begin, an old lady, a scout out camping, a girl who tells him about Father Christmas, a man with a telescope and a black cat who takes him exploring.

Tyler is having some separation anxiety and is trying to get Laura in to some crazier and crazier situations. He did however make somewhat uncritical use of evidence from other people, such as travellers and beekeepers. This book shines an expert and unflinching light on the uncountable harms that we inflict on other animals. Now Laura is engaged to be married and her teetotal classical pianist fiancé, Jim, is away overseas.
